Do you remember what it was like when you first knew you had lupus?  What questions raced through your mind?  Were you frustrated by a long wait for the diagnosis?  Did you have questions about what life would be like with this chronic illness?

If so, you are like most people learning they have lupus.

The Lupus Society of Alberta wants to help.  We receive many phone calls from folks asking just these questions.  We want to build a network of trained, home-based telephone peer volunteers to talk with others in their area seeking support and general information.

We are looking for folks from across Alberta with lupus willing to take a six hour training session.  Even if you don’t decide to become a peer volunteer, this is excellent information to have!  Training will include:

Benefits of volunteering for this program
How to be a good listener
How to encourage people to talk
Roles and limits of responsibility of volunteers
How this program has worked in other groups
Why confidentiality is so important
Who to call when you are not sure
When to refer the caller to LSA’s Services Coordinator for more help

Are you…

  • well enough now to consider a day of training?
  • someone who likes to talk on the phone?
  • coping well with your own adjustments to living with lupus?
  • able to empathize with people newly diagnosed with lupus?
  • open to others about how lupus has impacted your life?
  • able to listen to others’ stories with an open mind?

We are looking for volunteers from across Alberta.

You do not have to :

  • Be home during the day
  • Continue any calls you are uncomfortable with
  • Pay any extra long distance telephone expenses!
