While the approval of Benlysta® in the US is certainly cause for excitement, there are a couple of things to keep in mind here in Alberta:
- Benlysta® is not for everyone who has lupus. It has been approved in the US for adult patients with active, autoantibody-positive systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who are already receiving, but not fully responding, to standard therapy.
- While the FDA has approved Benlysta® for use in the US, it has not yet been approved for use in Canada. Regulatory applications to have Benlysta® approved for use in Canada have been submitted and are currently under consideration. The date that Benlysta® will be available for use in Alberta is currently unknown.
